On a very stormy day in December my family & I visited London’s newest addition to its skyline,The Shard. As we whizzed up the 70 plus floors my daughter asked me ‘Who lives in the Shard?’ ‘Well’, I said, ‘it’s probably offices where people come to work.’ On the top the view was spectacular and as the wind whistled by you could feel the building swaying a little, exhilarating! As we descended in the lift my other daughter commented on what a great place to work this would be with such brilliant views. It got me thinking and after a bit of research I found a news story suggesting that the take up of office space was in fact a lot lower than they had expected. It was,the article said, down to a number of factors including the location of the building in relation to the Square Mile and the cost of the office space they were charging. I thought of something else and it was this, ‘Do we need as much office space in London these days? Are we becoming a more mobile and flexible workforce?’
As you may remember from last year, there was a huge outcry whenYahoodecided to go against the prevailing trend and ban home working. If nothing else it highlighted the fact that more people are spending increased time away from the office whether that be working at home, working in customer offices or working on remote sites.
